For jim_t
In honor of jim_t's beautiful Ode to Pocky, I give you:
Giant Pocky.
They have them at new Paul Frank store downstairs from our usual dim sum place. It took all my will power not to buy and ship boxes of them to everyone I know. It's just that good.
Mmmmm. Pocky.

THE ART OF BLEEDING PRESENTS
THE POISON SHOW
Featuring ABRAM THE SAFETY APE
RT THE ROBOT TEACHER, DR. MOODY
Special opening acts by MARGARET CHO
SATANICA, JEWEL OF DENIAL, &
TOY SURPRISE.
From the lethal sting of exotic insects to the humble asphyxia produced by household cleaners, the topic of accidental poisoning will be lovingly addressed in tonight's all-new evening-long one-night cavalcade of bickering puppets, indecently attired nurses, scratchy classroom films, absurd props, soiled costumes, and pedagogical burlesque otherwise known as The Art of Bleeding. Tonight, ABRAM THE SAFETY APE grapples with core issues of his professional identity, RT the ROBOT TEACHER tries his hand at playwriting, and DR. MOODY explores the psychic marshlands of True Safety Consciousness... ALL while providing invaluable information on poisoning emergencies!
Augmenting tonight's lessons will be carefully choreographed poisoning scenarios by: Legendary comedian and accomplished belly dance diva MARGARET CHO shimmying her way through toxicological exotica, infernal stripteuse SATANICA shaking her stinger in a cautionary dance of entomological envenomation, burlesque dancer JEWEL OF DENIAL presenting a working girl's tale of glamour, popcorn, and poisons, and contortionist
TOY SURPRISE & Dadaist dandy PAUL "K" enacting a sad fable of a gothic Goldilocks and naturally occurring toxins.
EMERGENCY ROOM ATTIRE (Patient or Staff) HIGHLY ENCOURAGED!
At CIA(California Institute of Abnormal Arts)
11334 Burbank Blvd, North Hollywood
For those new to tonight's venue, please note that even without a performance by Art of Bleeding, CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF ABNORMAL ARTS, is must-see for any connoisseur of the bizarre. Much more than a performance space it's a "mini-Smithsonian" of sideshow ephemera including,a dead fairy, the severed arm of a French nobleman, the head of Bigfoot, and more! With all those collections, there's not much room for a stage or seats, so COME EARLY to ensure your space. And CIA has also somehow managed to squeeze a liquor license into the deal as of the last few months.
Tickets: $10.
Doors: 9 pm, Opening acts -10ish, Abram & Crew- 11ish.

Existence precedes essence. Or dinner, I'm not sure.
Blatently stolen from Metafilter's thirdparty, I give you:
The Jean-Paul Sartre Cookbook! (From this nifty thread)
Hee!
Random House
Choosing this material for the kitchen curtains makes up for the fact that I'm blogging about kitchen curtains, doesn't it?
Anyway, last night the Arclight had a special showing of Dr. Strangelove as part of AFI's 100 Years/100 Movie quotes.
Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!
It's one of my favorite movies, and it was amazing seeing it on the big screen. Even better, they managed to get an original print from the studio so the picture quality was outstanding. It was a total movie-geek evening. I wish could more eloquently express how relevant the film is today; it's almost comforting that we're still struggling with the same issues - after all, it's proof that we've survived inept and corrupt government before. With any luck we'll do it again.
If you haven't seen it, rent it - if you've seen it before, watch it again. I'll wait here.
In the meantime, I'm reading this
article about how to do work you love. I haven't finished it, so I'm not sure if I agree with it or not. It's a subject that's on my mind frequently, so it's worth posting here for future reference.
Enough internet for today - time to get some work done around here.

Project Remodel
So, day two of the house remodel is now in session. Yesterday sexyrobot and I braved the black hole/time warp that is Ikea for furniture that doesn't look like it came out of a dorm room. (No, that sentence is not self-contradictory.) The best piece so far is this, which matches the existing bedroom furniture beautifully. Getting it home on the roof of my little Kia was an adventure in itself.
Today it's off to the garment district to buy material for drapes and such to replace the truly unfortunate vertical blinds.
Must. Get. Caffeine.

3 day weekend!
Started out Friday with a highly mediocre dinner at Cheebo. One of our neighbors recommended it, and the menu sounded great. It turned out to be one of those restaurants you really want to like but somehow the vibe was all wrong. What should have been fun and funky turned out pretentious, annoying and overpriced. The admittedly adorable server didn't help matters much - he was so busy fawning all over the guests at the next table (celebrities?) that he forgot to tell us about the specials and reserved all the cold, unsalted chips for us. Maybe I should have stuck to cocktails?
Saturday started out rainy, then turned into a gorgeous but chilly day. Found an awesome furniture store in Little Tokyo, and now I want one of everything that they have in stock. Got cheap sushi (which sounds more tragic than it actually is) and a bunch of goodies for the week. I'm back on a 'let's cook at home' binge - hopefully I'll be able to maintain better (spending and eating) habits that way.
Sunday was the LA Auto Show with sexyrobot. Let it be known that he's the only person on the planet capable of dragging me there. The two high points of the day: 1) I got to visit my mini in person. (Soon, darling - SOON!) 2) And - ok, sit down - I can't find an image, so this'll take awhile.
Visualize a man's face. Trace an imaginary line (oh, about the width of a sharpie pen) from above the ear, where eyeglasses sit. Take that line and draw it down and around the base of the jaw, then go up over the opposite ear. Continue that line down, back and across the back of the skull at the point where a typical conservative man's haircut would end, completing an unbroken loop.
Now imagine that someone shaved their head/beard into that pattern, that you're me, you're standing BEHIND that fool at the LA Auto show and your job is not only to avoid cracking up, but furthermore, you're NOT allowed to take a picture! I nearly imploded.
Today we walked to the Farmer's Market (Walked! In January! I love my neighborhood.) scored fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, eggs and bread. They even have a fishmonger! This is gonna be good.
Afterwards the_bone and I went to the final day of the Cezanne & Pissarro exhibit at LACMA. He was able to score VIP tickets from a colleague, which meant no waiting in line. It was a wonderful show and I got so much more out of it after the Art History class I took last semester. This (Paul Cezanne's Sous-Bois) was one of the last works on display - it was breathtaking in person. I'm so glad we had the opportunity to see it.
I will try to get back in the habit of posting more frequently, I've really missed it.

Wow.
It's early, I'm hungry, it's raining and I'm too lazy to leave the house. How I wish I had one of these!

Circusfaerie's MRI was today. Waiting for results, the follow-up appointment has been scheduled for the 24th.
Keep thinking positive thoughts.

I want instant gratification, and I want it NOW!
Still. Unpacking.
Just how in flaming fuck did I end up with all this stuff?!
Now, I realize this is a good problem to have (abundance), and I also have it on good authority that it takes much, MUCH longer than you think to get everything unpacked and get settled into a new home. The original plan was to sort through everything before the move, but - as usual - the universe had plans of its own.
That being said, I'm thisclose to taking the rest of the boxes, unopened and unsorted, directly to the local thrift store and be done with it. Gah!

2006 update
The sobering news of the week:
- My townhouse is out of escrow - I am no longer a homeowner.
- Circusfaerie finally has a definitive diagnosis on her back trouble, and a treatment plan is in progress. Everybody send healing energy her way!
Things that made me laugh this week:
- (A mother to their child running wild in the local Target) "Du jour, get over here!"
- (Attempting an ill-advised left turn into the Shoe Warehouse) "Let me over - it's about shoes, bitch!"
- Q: "Honey, what would we do without Katamari?"
A: "I don't know - have a healthy relationship?"
Things that surprised me this week:
- Amazingly, I do not have LA's best bunz.
2005 was nothing compared to this!

Happy New Year: Part 2
Oh, my aching head.
Happy! New! Year!
Good god, ya'all it's 2006.
2-0-0-6! If that's not science fiction, I don't know what is.
Hope everyone has had a wonderful start to the new year, I know I did. I'll probably regret posting while drunk, but we rang in the New Year at Hot Dog and it was too good not to document.
Here's to the 2nd half of the decade - let's make it a good one!
