Always the last to know
So, I was diagnosed with ADD this week. I told Fishing Mike about it, and he totally knew this about me. We have a running joke about it ('Oh, shiny!') but I just thought it was a personality quirk, not a cluster of symptoms that can actually be explained and dealt with.
Am I the only one surprised? Is this really only news to me? As I look at the symptoms it seems pretty obvious in retrospect:
- A sense of underachievement, of not meeting one's goals (regardless of how much one has actually accomplished).
Difficulty getting organized.- Chronic procrastination or trouble getting started.
- Many projects going simultaneously; trouble with follow through.
- A tendency to say what comes to mind without necessarily considering the timing or appropriateness of the remark.
- A frequent search for high stimulation.
- An intolerance of boredom.
- Easy distractibility; trouble focusing attention, tendency to tune out or drift away in the middle of a page or conversation, often coupled with an inability to focus at times.
Trouble in going through established channels and following "proper" procedure.- Impatient; low tolerance of frustration.
- Impulsive, either verbally or in action, as an impulsive spending of money.
- Changing plans, enacting new schemes or career plans and the like; hot-tempered
- Physical or cognitive restlessness.
- A tendency toward addictive behaviour.
- Chronic problems with self-esteem.
- Inaccurate self-observation.

:O
Seriously though, for some of these I thought "Support group meets at the bar." And some of them were signs of a creative mind.
I'm glad you now have resources for more constructive work arounds though. It must be such a relief!!
