I went to Nebraska over the weekend for my dad's 60th and realized how harmful watching the news really is to me. I haven't watched the news in years, I haven't read news feeds on the internet in over a year and just not knowing has made my life so much better. On the local news this weekend it was bad news after scare tactics after depressing story. On the national news it was the same thing--even their "uplifting" person of the week story was centered around people combating true horrific-ness. It's really hard to maintain a sense of well being when we're faced with all that. It was good though--I got to reaffirm my decision to not put myself through that, and I got to see first hand how being surrounded by that affects people (my dad and his wife and the rest of the family really have negative opinions about the state of the world and it's a struggle for them.)
