It's soapbox time!

I don't usually use this space to discuss controversial subjects. After all, SpaceKitty.com began with the goal of creating a virtual happy hour - and one simply doesn't bring dissent to the cocktail party.

That being said, a recent abortion rights blog entry at Pandagon hit very close to home. Literally. The case they're discussing here took place in the obscure midwest town where I grew up. (!) Among the many maddening things about this lawsuit is the enormous difference between the poster's description of the case vs. the description taken from the anti-abortion website. You wouldn't even know they're describing the same woman! It's just another example of the divisions in this country, and makes me wonder if/when/how people will stop talking past one another and actually begin to communicate.

Given that a loud, vocal minority takes it for granted that women are fundamentally incapable of making decisions about their own life, health and well-being - I'm afraid I'll be waiting a long time for that day to come.

I know, empress. I descend into incoherence all too quickly around this topic, which is why I usually keep it apolitical here. But this just hit too close to home.

How can anyone think that the one person most impacted by the decision to either continue or terminate a pregnancy somehow isn't the person best equipped to make that decision?

If the law states that you don't even have control of our own body and reproductive choices, what else can possibly be taken away from us? Terrifying.

Also, support NARAL. Donate now, and your contribution will be doubled and used to help fight South Dakota's attempt to ban abortion.
